Ok, so it's easy to tell when the body falls asleep and the brain activates. As this happens, my vision goes white when normally it is black (because that is what you see when you close your eyes) and I hear the tinnitus ringing go very loud. Then my body starts either going numb or starts vibrating and then I feel my astral body partially leave. As it leaves, I hear strange noises (I can ignore them easily). I can still feel my physical body. From that point, do I think of the place I want to go or do I wait until I'm completely out and is this the similar for anyone?

The main thing is to get out of your body. If you stay in for too long the ap can end. As soon as you know you can ap, I would get out of your body and say where you want to go to while you are getting out and keep saying it when you are out of your body.
