What do you mean, BigJohn? What do you mean by "merit"?
Come to think of it, Cobbler could have one meaning for "merit", AbodhiSky another meaning, and me something else. I will go first.
To me, merit means doing something that makes the world a better place. Better to whom? We have been trying to make the world a better place for humanity since WW2 and bombing the hell out of every country we went into.
Bodhiharma could be right.

Odd comment......
As for "WE", I haven't been involved in any of things you mentioned.

Happiness is the result of an enlightened mind whereas suffering is caused by a distorted mind.

Involvement in any of the things I mentioned is not a matter of choice unless you are not human.

Simply quoting myself as it seems that I have been misunderstood. The treacherous sea of language.
Of course all should strive to create a more just human community. As I understand it, "no merit" is all to do with "enlightenment". As always in the Dharma, the "two truths" - and which is being addressed.

Bodhidharma: ' Doing things for merit has an impure motive and will only bare the puny fruit of rebirth '

Merit Making.
In some Countries you will see 'Merit Making' ( As they call it ) but if you read Buddha's Teachings this is about the 'Self' and not other's, they are seeking merit from their actions rather than giving without expecting a reward. I personally see Merit in Buddha's Teachings as a 'Happening' instead of a 'Doing', spontaneous without thinking I am ' Merit Making' and expecting something in return.
Boddhidarmas quote above says it well imo....

Indeed, you have been misunderstood, not on account of language; and I accept the rap on the head for jumping to the wrong conclusion.
