The falling sensation that you experience could be due to the fact that, as you progress in SP and you start to lose sensory input, the thalamus region of the brain, which is right next to the pineal gland, may provide you with erroneous spatiality perceptions and strange sensations.

All nightmares are caused by palpitations. The most common feeling resulting from palpitations are seeming to be bursuing and heart suspension or heart sinking so the most common nightmares has dreamed of being attacked or bursued and falling down or hanging in the air. Women have worse nightmares than men, because palpitations are a commonsymptom in all age groups, more commonly in women than men. Women are more likely than men toexperience heart palpitations when suffering from a stroke.

Xan,

If flying dreams are out of body experiences, would being in an airplane in your dream and feeling the plane climbing and decending be out of body experiences as well?

All nightmares or night terrors are caused by palpitations .There are three main types of nightmares(death dreams or being chased dreams ,flying dreams or falling dreams and Incubus or sleep paralysis) that are caused by three main scary symptoms {the scary sensations of palpitation make you feel as if you are going to die at any moment[1],the scary sinking feeling in heart of palpitation and scary fainting (syncope) }. They are all different in certain ways. All three types of nightmares has symptom of a scary heart palpitations-sensations. Scary Incubus or scary sleep paralysis or scary fainting (syncope) has symptoms of scary lightheaded and dizzy , a loss of strength and a loss of consciousness, perspiration, vision problems, difficulty hearing, ringing in your ears, pressure in your chest[2] and others do not.

It's very simple for me... I consider ALL dreams to be experiences in the non-physical. I view Dreams, Lucid Dreams, Astral Projections and OBEs as all being the same kind of experience... that is an experience which you have in the non-physical (aka, a reality that isn't this physical reality).

What differentiates the experiences between those "labels" is how consciously aware you are during them.

Although German scientists Wilhelm Wundt thought that dreams were caused by stimulation of palpitations, abdominal distensions, urgent urinations and other objective things, he did not clearly indicate nightmares were caused by palpitations, and even did not give a satisfactory and convincing explanation to the reasons for nightmares. In addition, he did not have any mysterious insights, unlike the Freud’s mysterious theory of dream without scientific basis as well as Freud’s popularity due to capturing people’s curiosities, his correct opinions failed to receive wide attention. A paper published in Chinese Scientists 1996 proposed that nightmares were caused by palpitations, and the two most common nightmares were caused by the two most common reasons of palpitations. After giving satisfactory explanations to nightmares, someone from another country also published papers online in 2002, and proposed that nightmares were caused by palpitations. However, he also did not give any further satisfactory explanation, so his correct opinions also failed to receive wide attention.
