It sounds like you have done pretty well to get rid of the cane. I find it is always nicer and more relaxed to walk without one. I see people using Norwegian walking poles to go for walks, even on quite gentle terrain! It is much more natural, balanced, freer, and less strain on the arms to let the arms be relaxed and swing normally when walking.
Certainly walking will help with blood pressure, muscle function, bone strength, lung function, lymphatic and circulatory function, digestion etc. It probably won't make a great difference to HDL cholesterol. That is quite diet-related. But as exercise is good all-round for health, it won't do any harm!
I am not bothered whether I live a long time or not. But I am a wuss, and hate feeling ill. That's the thing!
I also avoid chemical pharmaceuticals except in dire emergency (Thank Heavens for pain killers whenever they are needed! LOL) I always use herbal medicine for anything else.
Pity you can't shove some of that almond cake down the internet....because I would surely like to share some of that with you! haha
