Post Ancient Alphabets

Hello,

What can you tell me about the Theban alphabet? I've seen pagans, witches, use this ancient alphabet on their BoS, or grimoire. Where is the origin from? There are other ancient alphabets, but many seem to be drawn to Theban.

Do any of you use these ancient & magickal alphabets? I'm currently drawn to Angerthas (Dwarf).

Omniglot has a lot of useful resources on languages and writing systems, especially if you are trying to learn a language. If you do a search on their website, you should find an article on Theban.

As for me, I am familiar with the Hebrew alefbet and the Futhark, but I'm not very good at reading Hebrew unless the diacritics are included. (Hebrew is an abjad, which means most vowels aren't usually written down. Also, shin does not correspond to the letter C... just sayin'.)

I use the Greek alphabet, though unfamiliar with most of the others on the chart. Interesting!

The Theban is generally thought to have been invented as a cipher by Abbot Trithemius in the 15th century. The other fancy alphabets following it in the table come from him, or his pupil Agrippa.

That table is not very reliable: e.g. the "Pictish" is a modern invention; the Greek Ψ is "ps" , not "y", and the "Hieratic" signs are actually hieroglyphic (and half of them are wrong!)
