The most ideal meditation object is generally the breath. No matter how many times your mind wanders, simply bring it back to the breath. The most effective way to calm the mind is to allow yourself to let go. Give yourself the permission to drop all stories, all worries, all planning, drop everything for the time you are meditating, knowing that you can go back to thinking about that stuff afterwards. Focusing on the breath coupled with letting go of all stress and mental stories is the method I have found to work best for entering deep, tranquil states of meditation. For your energy goals, you can even focus on bringing energy through your body along with the breath.
