in their 'raw' form or tumbled, does tumbling them damage their 'energies'

Not in my opinion. It depends on the particular stone, but i have several tumbled and raw stones, where ive found that the tumbled have more potent energies than the raw form.
I think that as long as you clense and programme your stone when you buy it.. the energies are fine :)

There are some that will tell you until they are blue in the face that tumbling and polishing will damage the internal meridians of a stone but I've never felt so. Some stones come into their own when polished (like blue apatite) and I've never seen a discernable difference between the many forms.
Programming is a personal thing, I sometimes don't do it but agreed about the cleansing side, a clean stone is a happy stone!
Kind blessings,
Whisp

Considering how most crystals are mined with either dynamite or pick axes, a little roughing up with some sand paper really isn't going to make a lot of difference!
