On a down-to-earth level, whenever you practice stretches that rely on flexibility, relax as totally as you can outside the necessary muscles and go slowly, so the contra muscles don't try to pull you back.

Take very great care of your knees. Don't try the padmasana without the proper preparation. If your knees go click or come out of joint, the trouble will last a very long time. Your knee is a hinge joint.
