can i have some tips/pointers on taking care of crytals?

Hi people! My boyfriend bought me an amethyst over the summer. I carried it around with me for a while, I noticed the effects of it greatly. It's a decent sized chunk on a necklace. It's important to me and I'd like to keep it in good condition, but I'm not sure how to do this. Lately I've been noticing little cracks and what not and I'm kind of scared I don't know what that means. I've been keeping it in my jewelry box, because I don't know if the weather is good for it. (I live in a cold snowy place) It also looks like it's losing color. Is this bad ?

I know how to cleanse, I usually bury it in an earthy forested area for a few days to ground it. This is all I know how to do though, so what do you guys do to keep your crystals healthy?
