Thumbs up Is seaweed vegan?

Hi everyone,

My sister is vegan and my mom has a vegan food business. They make "fish" out of veggie meat and some nori seaweeds... That's ok right? I mean I know it's a plant but I don't know if any fish or plankton are involved in processing it...

Also just wanted to say I'm not vegan but my mom usually cooks me a vegan lunch... Yumyum!

Drools over your Mom's vegan food. I miss the vegan shops in Taiwan and NYC.

The nori cultivating process is fascinating. Most are grown on indoor farms. I think what you are worried about is the zooplankton (animal plankton) eating off the photplankton (seaweed and algae) and getting processed. The other is fish feeding off the seaweed farms. They do set traps for fish. For the most part it's like worrying about eating insects and insects eggs off vegetables and grains.

I think it's fine. You shouldn't worry.

My parents are vegan but they are always telling me not to eat scallions, onions, and garlic because it's like eating meat. (some sort of religious references)

Wuuut I can't imagine not eating garlic!!! I'd choose garlic over meat anyday! Oh, and umm we can't deliver internationally but if you'd like to see her dishes it's at: www.cocogreen.ph hehehe. My sister would be proud of you lol. ♥

Oh and yes! The zooplanktons are exactly what I had in mind

Sybilline, the food on the website looks absolutely wonderful! Regarding seaweed, my wife and I take it for its nutrients and are convinced that it is vegan. The view of the noble knight above clinches it!

if you don't like seaweed as a dish, as an alternative, Pure Ocean Kelp is one of the finest supplements you can take. It is loaded with all manner of trace minerals. In fact pound for pound it is probably the most nutrient rich food there is.

How is onions and garlics like eating meat? I can see scallions because that's a marine animal but garlic and onion are veggies.

Skins Princess, it's some story/folk tale that the Taoist and Buddhist vegans go by. Some people of long ago were supposedely turned into onions and garlic. Out of respect, those vegetables are not eaten in many households. I will post the story should I find it.
