My story:
I was a terribly selfish and chaotic person as a child and teenager, but by the end of teenage years I started reading a lot about Ramana Maharshi, Neem Karoli Baba (mostly via Ram Dass), Carlos Castaneda's books, source texts of buddhism and hundreds of NDE experiences. It was mostly an intellectual curiosity, I wanted to know the truth. I felt very lonely and started having a desire to help the world and that is what saved me.

Six years ago I had my experience, I was basically meditating all day instead of reading & playing videogames, not any trained meditation but just a general "do nothing" state of being. Then I felt a call to watch a certain movie and during the movie everything changed. I saw with my mind's eye (but very intensely) a tunnel of light to my left with all my ancestors and it said that they love me and that I am never alone. I was crying tears of joy, my shirt became really wet because of the tears. I thought at the time: "everything that we go through is worth it if we get to this state every once in a while" (once in a while could be afer many lifetimes, it would still be worth). I called this experience at the time "receiving the holy spirit" even thought I wasn't christian. Altough many NDE experiencers see Jesus so I know there is something in christianity.

The following days were strange, it is like I opened a door to the spirit world and it didn't close again, and we humans aren't made for that. Nowadays I take anti-psychotic meds to close it or otherwise I'll be hearing voices and being paranoid.

Only some years later I stabilized enough to have my "dark night of the soul" where I saw everything wrong with my life and how I was selfish in so many ways, so recently I've been trying to share the message that spirituality is mainly a path from selfishness to selflessness and charity. If your path made you realize this, you are on a good path. If otherwise (for example: you feel nothing matters and people should care for themselves first), you may be walking in circles and not evolving. That's just my opinion though.
