Good that you used ' Buddhist ' rather than Buddhism .
It's Cultural but not part of Buddha's Teachings. In the Temple I attend you are asked to remove your footwear but only for Hygiene reasons or you can use shoe covers... As for the direction of your feet, it's never mentioned. I love your Sufi quote

In Buddhists predominate lands, tourists generally get caught up in that issue. The Temple I go to in the USA, the same custom is upheld but there are some who do not know and if nobody tells them, they continue doing that. The Monks generally are too shy to inform them. In Buddhist predominate countries, for example at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, there are people who tell visitors not to do that and not to take pictures.

As for the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, some people show up with shorts, sleeveless shirts/blouses, etc. and are not allowed to enter the property. If they want to enter, they are directed to a room that has appropriate clothing which a person can wear during their visit free of charge.

Something else that is prevalent in predominate Buddhist lands is the Dowry. This custom is very similar to the Muslim belief.

One day, I went to the Police Station to file a Police report and noticed a young man locked up in the prison cell. I inquired as to the reason he was locked up. He had sex with a woman and her parents demanded he pay the Dowry. If he could not pay it, he probably would be going to the main Prison.

In Buddhist predominate countries, sex before marriage is, for the most part, forbidden. If a couple is seen together, in many cases it is a sign they are going to get married and they looked upon as being 'almost; engaged.

One shop I use to go to, when I would arrive, the parents would call their daughter by cellphone and tell her to return to the shop. She was a beautiful young women. One day, she asked me to go with her to have some noodles. I turned her down mainly because how people would view us together.

Not sure where you are getting your information from.

Red Light Districts are NOT allowed in virtually all Countries in the World especially Buddhist predominate countries.
