THE BOOK HE NEVER WROTE. An ode to Robert Service.

Day after day he sat there in the park beneath the trees
I never saw him get there nor ever saw him leave
He sat there like a statue, an object made of stone
Sometimes I’d look and there he was but when I’d look again, he’d gone

He never seem to differ though I saw him everyday
An old man worn and beaten, who in a strange mysterious way
Seemed to stir a distant memory a mist like question came to mind
And I tried to give it substance give it form in space and time

But somehow it eluded me, was it something from my past?
Why did his presence haunt me and hold me in its grasp?
His eyes they never wandered from the window of my room
Like some ghostly apparition, had it risen from some tomb

And then today while at my writing desk just staring into space
I spied him the shadows that man without a face
Then a voice welled up inside me, Oh God another has awoke
And he pleaded, will you write it, the book I never wrote?

Poor soul, oh how I weep with you, you child of old Khayyam
But this world is far to busy and I doubt they’d understand
They’ve never smelt the fragrance from the gardens far below
Nor wandered on the hilltops where the sweetest blossoms blow

Nor do they keep our custom and turn their wine glass down
To pour a small libation to those beneath the ground
Their future lies in darkness their past is darker still
And though I think it useless, of course I’ll do your will

We’ll write the book you never wrote and trim it’s edge with gold
We’ll fill it with your tenderness your wisdom brave and bold
Each page will scintillate with wit and clutch the readers throat
I pray that they will learn from it, the book you never wrote

Every line will ring with truth, with hope and joy on every page
A cheer, a clarion call to youth, a hymn, a comforter to age
All there that you were meant to be your part divine from the God in me
The God who dies that we might see our promised gift of eternity

So now at last my dear friend, come sit, and you can write the end
The end to darkness, thirst and pain, for you’ll never fear nor weep again
Exultantly from shame and wrong your glory rises in our song
And this we’ll not forget to do, we’ll bind your book in brilliant blue.

Thank you. I appreciate it.
There are so many unwroten books, the universe cannot hold them;
each page is flying through the places we dismiss;
each line is waiting for a new beginning, or some erase, or some highlight;
or simply for a patient reader that understand how much a blank space can say.

How many books had the young lad read?
Mysterious tales of the living dead
Books of demons and ancient kings
Of magic lanterns and other things.

He called up the visions of far distant lands
With their crystal clear waters and golden sands
But those visions were shadows, merely dreams in his head
For his whole life revolved round those stories he’d read.

She stood there beside him grasping his hand
And hoping that this time -- he might, just understand
That the woman beside him, once the love of his life
Was the woman he’d asked -- to one day be his wife.

Would the scent of her body, the touch of her hand
Bring back the memories of those nights on the sand
Unmoved by her presence, eyes fixed on the wall
His severe damaged brain, could never recall.

Tears rolled down her cheek as she kissed him good bye
While whispering these words; “Why darling why?”
Leaving her Partner after one final hug
She cursed that Last party and curse those damned drugs.... The Anointed.

THE FORESTS OF MANKIND.

Written many, many years ago in my rebellious youth.

When I walk here in the forest
Leaf litter round my feet
With dead wood lying everywhere
Especially ‘round the mountains peak
I know we’re in for one Hell of a fire
And wouldn’t stop it if I could
Cos that’s natures way of cleaning up
The rotten dry dead wood

Now the forest that I’m talking ‘bout
Is the forest of mankind
That grew from a seed called Adam
Way back in ancient time
And now the dead wood and the litter
In which destructive vermin dwell
Will be the cause of the greatest fire
This side of flaming hell

So if you’ve got a half a brain
And a pair of eyes to see
Then come and stand here by my side
And take a walk with me
First we’ll stroll on down to Canberra
And sit there in the house
While we listen to our leaders
As they call each other louse

Or dirty filthy scumbags
What great vocabularies
But when you haven’t got the answers
And brains smaller than a pea
Then you resort to hurling insults
What other weapon have they got
Cos wisdom or direction
Don’t exist among that lot

They won’t make the hard decisions
Nor see them to the end
Like the bulrush on the waters edge
To the minor groups they bend
The ones who yell the loudest
Are the ones to who they listen
While we the quite majority
Are just a mob of ears they **** in

God loves those politicians
Especially them, the ones that lie
That’s why he made so many
That’s a joke that makes me cry
For every torso has a head
And to the body it must serve
So if you’re gonna cop their lies and rot
You’ve got the head that you deserve

And what about our courtrooms mate?
Well this you have to see
Dispensing justice should be their job
Protecting you and me
But justice in this earth is dead
I think the world’s gone mad
There’s no justice for the victim
No compensation’s paid

Just make the claim that you were drunk
You don’t remember what you done
And the judge will slap you on the wrist
Then say to you, my son
You’ve gotta clean your act up quickly
Or to jail you’ll have to go
But I’ll suspend your sentence one more time
So be a good boy, now off you go

And say sorry to that pensioner
Whose house you broke into
Say sorry that you flogged him
And jammed his head into the loo
Give him back the seven dollars
That you stole from him that night
You’re just a lad and he’ll forgive you
Then everything will be alright

And what about our public parks
Where families used to come
To sit and have a picnic
And let their children run
And play there underneath the trees
You can’t do that any more
Abusive drunks now make their homes there
Like some festering cancerous sore

And don’t blame the poor old coppers
For you know their hands are tied
By the government and the judges
Bloody hell, they’ve tried and tried
To do the right and proper thing
But they get their backsides kicked
How they stay in that thankless job
Has got me bloody licked

Now I’m speaking here about local things
Yet you can bet your half a crown
That people living everywhere
Will think I’m talking ‘bout their town
And nothings ever gonna change
‘Till the silent people shout
And go to the polls with our brains in gear
To vote the dead wood out

Tell them that we’ve had a gutful
We’re gonna cop their **** no more
Let the coppers do their flaming job
And carry out the law
Let’s see a bit of justice in this world
Where now it’s dead
And there’s something else that I shouldn’t say
But it’s screaming in me head

And I’ve gotta say what’s in me
Let it out or else I’ll burst
To see the crims attack the judges
And make them bloody hurt
Hurt their wives and families
And trash their house out
Cos while they live in them ivory towers mate
They won’t hand no justice out...... The Anointed.

O! That shepherd of the darkness who claims God sent him out
And even though we know that’s true, that fact I wouldn’t flout
For God commanded Zechariah, “Throw my wages ‘cross the floor,
Those thirty bits of silver, for I’ll guide this flock no more
A worthless shepherd now I’ll raise to guide this stubborn flock
And he will be a useless one, of him I’ll take no stock
For he’ll not feed my little ones, nor search for them that’s lost
But he eats the meat of the fattest sheep. And their hoofs? He tears them off
That worthless shepherd, he is doomed for abandoning my flock
His power, will I destroy by war, his arm will wither dry, then drop
And his right eye will I turn Blind, that’s why he’s never seen
The passage where I speak of him, Zechariah eleven—twelve to seventeen.

HAVE YOU EVER

Have you ever seen a shooting star
Burn out in the evening sky
Or watched a flickering ember
Blaze bright before it dies
Or heard the laughter of a little child
With a terminal disease
It’s enough to make a grown man cry
And drive him to his knees....... The Anointed.

The spirit bears witness I Am, Who I Am,
I have no need of the witness of man.
The spirit inside with who I am one
Cries out through his kingdom, “Behold him: My Son.”
Here is the one in who I am pleased;
He obeys my instructions, my words does he heed
Here is the spirit of He who once died
And was poured out on those who believed they would rise.
And here they now stand as one cob of corn,
From the seeds that I planted, they as He are reborn,
And they do I place on the thrones I’ve prepared;
At the head of the body of my Son and my heir.
For they judge nor condemn the body as one,
But realise that He is my growing Son.
Yes! The voice of my Father cries out, “You are free;”
A New Creation, who lives eternally.........The Anointed.
