Be like the sun for grace and mercy. Be like the Earth for modesty.
Be like the night to cover others’ faults. Appear as you are.
Be like running water for generosity. Be as you appear.
Be like death for rage and anger.
                                                                                          Rumi

The Suicide’s Soliloquy
assumed to be penned by Abraham Lincoln

[poem was printed on the front page in the Sangamo Journal
of Springfield, Illinois, August 25, 1838 issue]

Here, where the lonely hooting owl
Sends forth his midnight moans,
Fierce wolves shall o’er my carcase growl,
Or buzzards pick my bones.

No fellow-man shall learn my fate,
Or where my ashes lie;
Unless by beasts drawn round their bait,
Or by the ravens’ cry.

Yes! I’ve resolved the deed to do,
And this the place to do it:
This heart I’ll rush a dagger through,
Though I in hell should rue it!

Hell! What is hell to one like me
Who pleasures never know;
By friends consigned to misery,
By hope deserted too?

To ease me of this power to think,
That through my bosom raves,
I’ll headlong leap from hell’s high brink,
And wallow in its waves.

Though devils yell, and burning chains
May waken long regret;
Their frightful screams, and piercing pains,
Will help me to forget.

Yes! I’m prepared, through endless night,
To take that fiery berth!
Think not with tales of hell to fright
Me, who am damn’d on earth!

Sweet steel! come forth from our your sheath,
And glist’ning, speak your powers;
Rip up the organs of my breath,
And draw my blood in showers!

I strike! It quivers in that heart
Which drives me to this end;
I draw and kiss the bloody dart,
My last—my only friend!

          Garments are shed after well-worn use,
just to clothe ourselves once more in newer trappings?
            or to dance naked among the stars?

                           Chains of iron,
                           chains of gold..
    paper tethers all binding us to false uncertainty
    as footsteps that echo in the annals of antiquity...
               until the time comes to move on..
                           to exit the stage.

                                                          Shivani Devi

“In 1931, when Brave New World was being written, I was convinced that there was still plenty of time. The completely organized society, the scientific caste system, the abolition of free will by methodical conditioning, the servitude made acceptable by regular doses of chemically induced happiness, the orthodoxies drummed in by nightly courses of sleep-teaching — these things were coming all right, but not in my time, not even in the time of my grandchildren…Twenty-seven years later, in this third quarter of the twentieth century A.D., and long before the end of the first century A.F., I feel a good deal less optimistic than I did when I was writing Brave New World. The prophecies made in 1931 are coming true much sooner than I thought they would… The nightmare of total organization…has emerged from the safe, remote future and is now awaiting us, just around the next corner.”

Brave New World Revisited by Aldous Huxley

"We have not even to risk the adventure alone,for the heroes of all time have gone before us.The labyrinth is thoroughly known;we have only to follow the thread of the hero path.And where we had thought to find an abomination,we shall find a god.And where we had thought to slay another,we shall slay ourselves.And where we had thought to travel outward,we shall come to the center of our own existence.And where we had thought to be alone,we shall be with all the world."

~Joseph Campbell.

"When a vision comes from the thunder beings of the West, it comes with terror like a thunder storm; but when the storm of vision has passed, the world is greener and happier; for wherever the truth of vision comes upon the world, it is like a rain. The world, you see, is happier after the terror of the storm."
