Wolf found in Holland

Dutch scientists are examining a "wolf" carcase found beside a motorway. It seems like the wolf has reached the Channel. The only country wolf-free is now Britain - pity the land bridge is no longer there. The wolf was one of our ancient inhabitants and should be welcomed back.
Come on, brothers, just one last step to take

For other UK wolf "fans", buy the i newspaper today. There is an excellent two-page article about the spread of the wolf in Europe.

Now you may think that I am "nuts" but we removed the top predator in Britain with the result that other species lack the natural control from nature. For example, the fox. The wolf would not permit foxes to thrive in their present numbers, they would cull the foxes ! Likewise, in Britain, we have a problem with deer - they are breeding out of control and chewing up our greenwoods. There is also talk here of massive culls of millions of deer - much better for there to be a natural cull by the wolf. People who say there is no room in Britain for the wolf are ignorant about Britain. We have vast tracts of open country in both the North, Scotland, the south-west, and Wales.

I agree Norseman.
But I feel the hill-farmers are going to take some convincing.
I wonder if returning to the old ways, such as employing shepherds with dogs to guard the flocks, there would be smaller danger to the hill farmers' livelihoods. Proper sheep-guarding dogs would be a force to be reckoned with for most wolves.

Tobi, I suspect our moorland sheep are carnivores - certainly no fear of dogs !
Better way would be to pay farmers for every animal taken. Wolves actually improve the stock by taking weak, old animals.

This made me smile, Norse.
It will surely get some farmer's attention when wolves gets introduced back in Britain.
It will be a good thing to bring up at the Department of Conservation and District Councils.

It would give farmers something to moan about, that's for sure. In Yellowstone Park, they wiped out the wolf and the coyote got out of control. Wolf re-introduced and no more coyote problem. The ranchers were paid for every animal taken by the wolves - actually very few. The main prey was the bison and they are no pushover.

I want to hear wolfsong echoing around the moors and dales of the North.

The wolfsong...
Yes, that would be nice.
But no wolves around the country where I currently am at present.
And the dogs do not really howl around here either, unlike in some parts of Asia where I hear them time to time going for it.
