Interesting anecdote. Now for the real work: let's take the dog and see if it can reliably detect in enough cases to statistically verify it's abilities!

They are now actually training dogs to detect cancer, much as some dogs are trained to detect explosives and drugs etc.

That's pretty awesome!

Makes me wish that I didn't have a pathetically dull (human) sense of smell. >_<; But is it smell? I wouldn't think cancer has a smell. Explosives and drugs could, yes, but cancer? Wonder what acuity the puppies have that we relatively insensate humans are lacking...

The body exudes smells which will change when someone has cancer.
The advantage dogs have over human is that they can separate a smell into its individual components and so masking of components is not possible.
