Not a silly question at all.
First, if others handle your stones, some their energy and some of whatever energy they are carrying about will be left in the stone (also energy from stone will leak onto them). Its a good idea to clear 'your' stones after anyone else handles them (or after they are used for healing or readings). Since clearing removes all energy, don't let anyone handle stones you are purposely charging up (for future use).
As you have experienced, certain stones feel 'right' to you, this is because their energy aligned with yours in a positive way. As most stones don't align with you, your stones will not align with most people. This not a 'judgment' of the stone, just an energy mismatch. If there is a serious mismatch, that person will feel a repulsion (also sometimes an itching, spark, grating, queasiness).
