I agree with the tone of the several replies here. It's spiritually important to detach oneself from "bad friends" who aren't friends, sometimes more like fiends. Most often they use/abuse the befriender or emotionally drain them.
As Lynn says detachment may take time, if the person is dependent on the baddie for any reason. A possible route out may be to take up with something topically different (a new hobby, say) to change ones orientation and so remove the dependency.
One of my associates was in a similar position so volunteered to help at a gardening club, very new to him, thus exposing a whole new range of friendships that helped with the breakaway.
Lynn made some very good points.

Your experience reminds me of an associate I bump into about once a week, and that's enough for me! After much 'discussions' rather him talking at me and pontificating about how much he knows,I came to the conclusion that he is rather dim but with psychological problems and his behaviour is like he is compensating for having a poor fund of knowledge.I read into some types of narcisistic disorders and they seem to describe his behaviour well.I do find it hard to get away from him though, not sure why, could seem like a challenge for me to get something through to him as he always thinks he's right.

Could be... I agree, though. People like him are usually hard to educate.
