Your friend has a point. Spirituality has more to do with experiential understanding than intellectual understanding. Often a strong intellect goes together with a strong ego , which tends to block spiritual development.

You can find religious scholars who may be highly developed intellectually but very poor in the spiritual level.

On a positive side, reading scriptures, along with its contemplation and application increases equanimity of mind, and is a very good spiritual exercise in its own merit. Reading positive content, with its contemplation and application in life can bring enhanced quality to living as well. Reading without proper application is useless.

So you can find both positives and negatives to reading.

I find that reading spiritual texts from all different cultures can trigger the spiritual seed that is ready to grow inside you. In the end all these texts say the same thing, but for some reason one text triggers something while the other doesn't. Just make sure you don't just read and study to try to mentally understand what it all means. Like others are saying, you have to LIVE it.

Reading helps me grow. I read and learn. My thoughts broaden and I am able to encompass more spiritual reality. Now applying what I have learned is a whole different ball of wax. That takes time and effort.

I think all people are different and if you find reading satisfying, you should continue to read. Do not pay attention at those who are not interested in things that amaze you. Just find new friends and you will see how many people are doing what you do!

Certainly, reading texts and teachings - if they are of the Light - from multiple sources and religions is beneficial to spiritual development and understanding.

It gives one a broader outlook on life and a greater understanding of other peoples and their points of view. Also it serves to remind us of our shared humanity.

And most importantly, wisdom, often great wisdom, even life-changing wisdom!, is to be found in many places. (Often the most unexpected places.)
