"Ordinary" sleep paralysis is just the opposite of sleepwalking. When you dream, your limbs should be immobilised, for obvious reasons. If the sleeping and the immobilisation get out of sync, you get sleep paralysis or sleepwalking.

There is a thing called the Old Hag, which you can read all about in David Huffords's The Terror that Comes in the Night. The symptoms are: you wake up suddenly with paralysis, feel a hostile presence approaching, and then have difficulty breathing. Often you see a cloudy shape and/or hear a sound like sandpaper on wood. This is known all over the world today and it scared the ancient Greeks and Romans too. The good news is that the Old Hag doesn't do any more than give you a fright. It's very common: a survey showed that 18% of people in the USA have encountered it.
