You are lucky that your teacher spoke with you, my communication with my gurus is telepathic almost all the time. I have had the guidance of two gurus at different stages of my life and both of them seldom speaks to me. At certain difficult times in my life, this kind of communication is frustrating for me because I am still not good at telepathic communication with ease when I am under stress. Of course if my frustration reaches a tipping point, my gurus understand it and then one of them speaks a word or two, either physically or through my dream. Surprisingly that word or two always proved to be enough to address the issues I might be facing at that time.

If I had not seen this personally with a friend at the Haridwar Khumba Mela (1998) and had it confirmed, I too would have been skeptical as you are. Initially, we wondered whether we had had a joint hallucination. However, when we went back to the ashram and mentioned it to our teacher who was sitting on the dais with other sages of India, she confirmed that it was not an hallucination: "You are blessed. He does this from time to time. Everyone knows this." ("Everyone" but us. )

NOTE: We recognized the sage who materialized before us since he had been at the Bandara (feast) the previous day and we noticed that the acharya and the mandeleswharas all bowed and touched his feet when they entered the assembly. Hence, we could identify him.

I have discovered over the course of time that telepathic communication is awesome since so much can be communicated very very quickly and effectively.

As I progressed under my teacher, she would say less and less verbally. Sometimes a simple glance spoke volumes. I understood.

I've noticed that, when one's mind is perfectly still, one can know without words what the other wants to communicate. Also, if the mental energy of the other is very strong, the communication can break through any mental noise that we may be experiencing when our minds are not still.

Telepathy is an intriguing SCIENCE to study ... without being intrusive and invading a person's private space.

When I had my awesome 9-year mysterious connection with a black "homeless" sage in NYC many years ago, he would immediately know all that I wanted to communicate without me having to say anything. It's akin to going to a therapist or a friend and all the background info is immediately communicated without words so that one can proceed quickly to the heart of the matter.

It's not necessarily based on how advanced one's soul is. In retrospect, some of my most life-transforming experiences happened when I was still a relative beginner .. intense but still a beginner. As my "homeless" black sage in NYC told me when I initially thought that I was superior to him due to my newfound yoga/meditation practice many years ago, "You weren't even at a level where we could discuss basics". He was right despite my misguided high perception of myself at that time. In any case, for some reason, we had a mysterious illuminating connection for 9 years (2 years of which were before he revealed himself) where he would just appear and then disappear when ... er ... I was doing something less than noble or had a question for him. He still ranks foremost among my ideals and I was very fortunate to have known him for so long despite being a very rank beginner.

You may have been a beginner Still Waters, but the signs are still there. It was only when you had reached the level of knowledge necessary that you were able to recognize them for what they were.

'Dying before death' practice, is this in regards to the beings in the Hiraṇyaloka?

Please let me know if I have missed it, but I believe Savikalpa and Nirvikalpa samādhi - very essential eligibility criteria for entring Hiraṇyaloka, is yet to be mentioned in this thread.
