In my opinion, what I read and heard from more experienced individuals in the past-life philosophy is that we are in a school. Each planet is a school to develop your character.

The animal reincarnations were classes in which you graduated. Now you are born as a human or a terrestrial with human intelligence.

It doesn't make sense to go backward in your life evolution.

This does not matter in evolution. A species either adapts to its environment and thrives or it does not.
Edit: Going ''backward'' is a matter of perspective. If bears for example become smaller or bigger over time it might be an advantage or disadvantage. There is no backward or forward, only ability to adapt to circumstances.

The ''human intelligence'' allows us to shape the environment to our desires, and as a consequence we reduce habitat for a greater number of species than we give back in return. This is the outcome of human intelligence. It does not strike as very 'forwards' in the long run.
