outer body experience or mental illness?
I went for a massage and even though I felt a bit 'off' afterwards (as I always tend to), it wasn't until the therapist mentioned that she too can have an outer body experience.
This was exactly what it felt like - depersonalization! I went out for coffee with a friend straight after and told her about it. She knew how I felt as she suffers from mental illness.
Can anyone explain what actually happens when going thru an out of it state directly after massage?

Hi, I am not sure. But depersonalisation is not an "Out of Body Experience" (although it is commonly mis-named as such.) An out of body experience is something quite different.
If you mean you felt detached from 'reality' in some way then maybe you were. Maybe that was a positive thing? Maybe the massage released some tension and put you in touch with some other part of yourself outside of the ordinary mundane viewpoint?
I always think that after some sort of healing or treatment it is better to find a quiet personal space or lie down for a while, and let the subtle energies of the body and Soul re-align. And to be aware there are bound to be some sort of shifts in energies or perception for a while until the new balance kicks in.

Thanks Tobi. How you explained it makes a lot of sense. After my next one I'm going to see if I can relax with this after experience. It wasn't entirely pleasant, perhaps due to forcing myself to concentrate on what my friend was saying and where I was.

I think you might have experienced what I used to call "massage drunk." Sometimes it is pleasant, sometimes it makes people feel weird.
During and after a massage, you usually experience a rush of endorphins, which is generally enjoyable, but can sometimes be a shock to the system if, for whatever reason, your own natural production has been lacking.
Or it could be the therapist's technique. Engaging and disengaging the parasympathetic nervous systems back and forth can actually cause anxiety in some people, and that is a risk you run if you don't have good "flow."
