While doing some research on sound healing on Google, I found an article on the subject from 2005 from the New York Times:

I have some time-sensitive information here, that anyone who is interested in working with sound energy will want to see.

There is a free interview online for the next 24 hours with Jonathan Goldman, the sound healing expert whose work I've referenced elsewhere in this thread. If you see this link after 24 hours have elapsed, I'd say try it anyway, just in case it's still available.

http://www.hayhouseworldsummit.com/?audioid=282

He is teaching the basics of sound healing and gives some demos on how to produce energizing and healing vocal tones. So we don't even have to go shopping for singing bowls, chimes, etc. -- we can produce tones right here, right now that will accomplish our goals.

And, of course, these vocal tones can be safely used to cleanse/energize crystals, as well. You bet I'll spread the word when I find a cleansing method that's safe for ALL crystals.

Thanks for the link, Likes2Read. It was informative, and I'm glad I had the chance to listen to it. One thing I got from it is that we are not all necesarily healed by the same sound. I had recommended a file for my friend to help her with charging her stones, but she hated the sounds. She said they made her feel desperate. Now to apply the link you shared, Likes2Read. Jonathan Goldman used the analogy of penicillin. Most people find penicillin to be wonderful. But to some, penicillin is a toxin. About 5-20% are allergic. So, my friend is "allergic" to the sound file I had recommended to her. I will find others for her to try instead.

There are definitely a lot of variations of different tones available online. Some are pure tones; others are intended to create a pulsing sound that helps train our brain to resonate with alpha waves (like those we produce in light sleep or meditation) or delta waves (deep sleep or meditation). Most online tones should be labeled so we know which type of tones they are. Experimentation is the key here, since what resonates best with us is only going to be determined by actually listening to the tones.

I tend to prefer sine wave tones to square wave tones. Seek examples of each one out and give them a listen, to see if you have a preference, as well.

Some tones are reproduced more clearly via earphones than by computer speakers, so listening to them via both methods will help you determine which listening method you prefer.

The same goes for your friend -- experimenting will help her determine which tones, and types of tone, she will benefit from most right now.

Incidentally, over time, our needs might change and so might the types of tones or frequencies that we benefit from. It's the same thing with the crystals we use -- today we might need the energies of one, while in future weeks or months we might find that a different crystal is calling out to us instead. Our needs always evolve.

Here's a cool freebie... I downloaded a free mp3 a few weeks ago, the 7-minute Chakra tuneup. I also downloaded the corresponding iPhone app.

Well, what did I run across on Youtube just now, but the very same tuneup, complete with tones and graphics.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8kwc1lkiAQ

Note the vowel sounds that correspond to the Chakras. You will be able to use those seed sounds to work on your Chakras, too.

I posted frequencies that I use for Chakra balancing elsewhere in this thread. Since that time I have discovered that other people use different sets of frequencies. There are a few different systems out there to choose from, and that's OK -- one of the things I've learned, in looking up sound healing, is that it's the INTENT that brings about the desired effect.

One thing I'm interested in trying is to use Chakra-specific tones to work on crystals that also resonate with specific Chakras. It's just been a while since I've used Stone X with Chakra Y. In the past few months, my focus has been on Diamond, Quartz, and Fluorite, each of which can be used with multiple Chakras.

But if you have stones that you're trying to use for working with one specific Chakra, try the above link and charge the stone with the seed sounds in the video, and see what results you get.

OOOOO happy happy joy joy

How do you combine sound energy and crystals? By finding a tuning fork made of clear quartz!

It's comparable in price to a quartz singing bowl, so I decided it was an investment worth making. Crossing my fingers that it, and its carrying case, arrive safely.

It will play a C note, but I'm not sure what frequency.

I look forward to adding it to my energetic "toolkit". :)

While driving to a friend's house this afternoon, I reached an intersection near my destination where it's OK to turn on a red light. There seemed to be no traffic, so I started turning. Suddenly, a car came SPEEDING through the intersection on the cross street, honking all the way. I let him go through (as I should, given that he had the right of way, speeding or not). However, the abrupt appearance of that other car gave me an energetic "AAAACK!" moment.

After seeing my friend, I got back in the car, and the unpleasant energy of that moment was still lingering in my car. Well, THAT won't do. I would no more want to sit in mud than sit in that nasty energy. Fortunately, there are fixes for such things. Before starting the car, I took my cell phone and set it to play the cleansing 528 Hz frequency for five minutes.

I happen to have a car where I can play the phone's audio through the speakers of the car, but in the absence of that ability, playing the tone through the phone speakers would have been a viable option.

Five minutes later, and I had a nice bright energy in the car again. Problem resolved.

Wheeee.... new tool alert! My quartz tuning fork arrived today. It's clear, lab-grown quartz and plays a C note: 512 Hz, which is a cleansing tone I use regularly.

I can't WAIT to use it throughout the house, which will most likely happen on Monday when I will have the house to myself without interruption. Clear, bright energy, here we come!

And one more post for the day. I have been experimenting with something called Binaural Beats.

The above link is to Wikipedia, so it's got a lot of layman's terms in it already (which is great, as most of us, including me, are starting from scratch when we head to the wiki for information). But I'll give a summation here. Binaural beats are tones that are best listened to with headphones. They play a slightly different frequency to the left ear than to the right ear. When this happens, we perceive a "beat" a certain number of times per second (known Hertz, Hz) that equals the difference in the tones. For example, if the left ear hears 528 Hz and the right ear hears 524 Hz, we will hear four beats per second.

The reason this matters is because there are studies showing that our brain (which also produces various number of "waves" per second, depending on whether we're wide awake, relaxed, or asleep) will start to MATCH the frequency of those beats we are hearing. "Real" scientists have worked with this, not just adherents to metaphysics.

Our brains produce different numbers of waves per second depending on our alertness state. Gamma state means we are awake and alert. Alpha state means we are relaxed, such as just before/after sleep or during meditation. Delta state occurs during deep, dreamless sleep or REALLY deep meditation. The wiki article linked above includes a chart of which state has how many waves per second.

So, what's the point of all this? The fact that if we play binaural beats that "match" the number of brainwaves of, say, the alpha (relaxed/meditative) state, then that will help our brains achieve the alpha state. So if we like to meditate, playing these binaural beats will help get us into the mental state we are looking to achieve anyway.

I bought some software that will help me create the kind of .wav and .mp3 files I'm looking for, with different binaural beats. (The software is not specifically designed with binaural beats in mind, but that is one of its capabilities.) I'm going to figure out how much space I have on my SoundCloud account, and post some things there.

I have been working hard lately learning about binaural, monaural, and isochronic tones. Binaural tones require the use of headphones, while monaural and isochronic tones do not. There seems to be some research that points to getting better "frequency following response", where the brain's own waves start to mimic the frequency of the sounds we are hearing, from the brain with monaural and isochronic tones.

Frequency following response works better when the tones are close to the frequency our brain is already producing. Therefore, I have tried an experiment.

I have created an isochronic file with Chakra balancing tones. It starts with a Beta frequency, the frequency of our awake and alert state. The frequency gradually drops down to Alpha frequency, which matches our brainwaves during meditation and relaxation. It stays there for several minutes, then gradually increases back to Beta frequency to help us resume our alert state.

Here is the file. Please give it a listen and let me know your results. It lasts 15 minutes.

While you will not need headphones to benefit from the isochronic beats, you WILL most likely need headphones to hear some of the lower-pitched tones, which computer speakers do not properly produce.
