I'm a Virgo and think I'd be incompatible with a Leo.

I do love their personalites -Leos have a natural sense of self-assurance. they are absolutely regal and have magnetic personality.

Usually the starsign before and after your own isn't a great match.

I like Leo men provided they've done enough personal growth etc. If not, then they're not a great match in general for Taurus and then chances are high you get two strong characters that'll butt heads.
When both have done a lot of growth and work they can be a great match.

I know I should not assume I'll be incompatible with someone soley based on their sun sign but I'm negative like that .
It's like people don't get that you're more than your sun sign. Someone who's an Aries Sun with a lot of Pisces in their chart may act more like a "stereotypical" Pisces than a Pisces Sun, versus a Pisces with a lot of air/fire in their chart.
(I mention these placements for examples)

In addition to overlooking the importance of the entire chart, people also forget that one's environment and upbringing probably has more impact on our personality than placements/signs ever could.

That's why threads like "Which sign is the toughest," or "Which sign is the best fighter," don't make any sense because any sign has the potential to be pretty much anything.

Like how in the heck is everybody born in a one month span supposed to be EXACTLY the same? Without considering other placements and houses, you get zero from a sun sign. Its my pet peeve.

That may all be true, but usually a starsign has typical traits that you will find in most if not all of that sign.
So far I've come to think -meaning it may not be right, but it's a theory- that this is especially the case when someone isn't feeling to great or hasn't done a lot of growth yet.
For instance, I'm not the typical Taurus, but when ill, tired, etc. I suddenly do feel these typical Taurus tendencies surface. But in normal day to day life the influences of my Moon, Venus and Rising add a whole different sense. But the bull is still underneath it all, hihi.

I've noticed a specific common thread running through all of a specific sign I won't mention, whether males or females.
Sure, their personalities and details of who and what they are were different. But this common theme/thread came up in them all!

I think that the sunsign is the core and the rest is the layers and sauce on and around it that will vary for everyone, making everyone unique.
Hell, even in displaying the typical trades of a sign will be done by each own unique ways. Likely depending on the other aspects AND upbringing etc.
For a few years I too thought the sunsign wasn't that important, couldn't be, as I am Taurus but not much like a Taurus. Yet -as I said- when tired, ill etc. I suddenly am 100% Taurus.
That made me think and believe that sunsign IS very important and basically the axis and the rest is attached to that, like the spokes of a wheel.

I think it's the core of one's personality and the details (Moon, Venus etc. & houses) add a unique mix to that, making everyone different.

Oh btw... when it comes to love matches I always prefer to look at someone's Venus. That is because my own Venus is in a strong placement for a woman: masculine Aries.
Not many men can deal with that in a woman. As I read in an article, and learnt to be true, it takes a man who's very well empowered in his masculine energy.
I've learnt that in that case even a Leo can waver when his Venus position is in a 'weaker' sign. I've had a Cancer -a softer sunsign- with a Venus in strong Leo and he didn't bat an eyelid! He could handle my Venus aspect easy-peasy.
BUt... his typical sun Cancer turned out to be less compatible with me... And was big part of the reason we divorced in the end.
