Not unconscious, THE unconscious if you're going down that road.

This is an excellent topic, hallow.

Prepare yourself for the coming astral journey of death by daily riding in the balloon of God-perception.
Through delusion you are perceiving yourself as a bundle of flesh and bones, which at best is a nest of troubles.
Meditate unceasingly, that you may quickly behold yourself as the Infinite Essence, free from every form of misery. ~Paramahansa's Guru's Guru

just speaking from my own experience, I have learned traits and I can understand where it comes from, family teaching along with what I learned from experience in my environment. But there traits and beliefs that are entirely different from what I experienced. Way different from family "dna" so to speak. I always wondered where that comes from. It's a strange feeling because of those differences I never was close to any family members for any amount of time.

I love this question. What are our observation. I would say this is actually a great definition of illusion and how it works. Things could (would) be different question. This is the question of nurture or nature. The environment being nurture. The point of the family environment affects us and we are taught. Change this element, and teaching as well, and the person would be different (change). This then is the illusion experience brings which is not reality but experience, illusion is dependent and conditional. Experience determine illusion and we create on it, reality. So is outside (environment) important. If I could go back in the past and change the experience I would not be the same if experience changes. I know I (it) would be different. In fact we go through this process all the time. How many times we think change is linked to environment, the outside. I think it is important to realize any outside is important and able to change us, parent, society, culture, teaching, all represent outside and all are part of our environment. Change environment, change nurture, creates change. The importance of outside.

A subject that interests Evolutionary Psychiatrists. A related question is why are there two genders in almost everything organic on the planet?

While we are not our environment we are always in a 'feedback loop' with it, so while it does affect us we also affect it to a certain degree. How it affects us is individual though. I grew up in a small town with small town attitudes and I hated the place up until I joined the air force. I was different to my environment and the people in it while I lived in it and liked it even less after having lived out of the bubble. While I loved my parents they understood my leaving.
