Important Reiki Information!

Greetings Rosewater! I am responding to your question about the effectiveness of Reiki via distance vs. in person training and attunement.

I am a Reiki Master of the Usui System (Usui Shiki Ryoho). We do not teach the method of distance initiations/attunements as the person who rediscovered Reiki, Dr. Mikao Usui, did not pronounce that to be a method used in his teaching or in teaching other masters. There can be nothing comparable to having a teacher there one-on-one with you. This affords you the opportunity to receive instruction, ask questions and receive the initiation/attunement the way it is supposed to be done with the master fully present in person to teach Reiki, initiate dialog, and participate in discussions.

I cannot speak to the attunement method done by distance since that is not taught as previously stated. One thing to understand is that there are many different forms of Reiki at the present time, some have called it offshoots from the original Usui System. It is obvious that some other systems use the distance attunement while Usui Reiki does not and therein lies the difference. I have been taught more in line according to tradition. There is the Traditional method vs. the Non-traditional which appears to teach the distance method of attunement.

If I understood you correctly, you appear to be saying that someone who attuned you via the distance method did not get back to you. That can be a problem and one of the reasons we always recommend having a one-on-one initiation/attunement with the initiating master fully present. Other things to be considered are the instructional methods to be used; whether a certificate is awarded at the conclusion of the course; whether a manual is given to the person being attuned; how long the master has been doing Reiki work, etc. I don't know if you got the answer to those questions or not but they are important ones to ask *prior* to receiving a Reiki initiation/attunement.

Another thing to bear in mind is that Reiki cannot be learned by just reading books or seeing films about it. It takes an actual initiation/attunement along with proper instruction to the appropriate level by a certified, qualified Reiki master. Usui Reiki Level 1 teaches the hand positions; the history of Reiki; affords time for the new initiate to practice on someone; the 21 day Cleansing Period is discussed, the Reiki Precepts are presented, etc. All of these things are important to learn and you receive them only with proper Reiki training. If you are taking Reiki Level 2, there are three Reiki Symbols that are taught along with their usage. Practice time is also afforded to draw the Symbols along with practice, etc.

Also, very important to know is the fact that some states in the United States of America have laws regarding the practice of Reiki. Therefore, it is important to be apprised of those laws by contacting your state for further information regarding regulation before commencing Reiki practice. For instance, while Reiki is done with a very light touch and even no touch at all in some instances, some states require a person practicing Reiki to be a Licensed Massage Therapist or be another state-licensed professional, e.g. a nurse, etc. We do not believe a spiritual energy modality such as Reiki should be regulated as the energy comes from God and who should be empowered to regulate God's work! To expound a little further into this, I will say that we are only conduits or channels for the energy that comes from God. Therefore, the energy used in Reiki is not our own.

One more thing to stress is that some people feel they are doing Reiki simply by laying their hands on someone else without actually having received the Reiki initiation/attunement and the recipient may even say they are feeling the energy. True, they may be feeling energy alright but It Is Not Reiki unless the person conducting the Reiki session has been properly initiated into Reiki by a master who is certified and qualified to initiate them. The person who merely lays hands on another is only using Their Own Energy and it is that that the person is feeling instead of Reiki.

An Usui Reiki Master will also give their students his or her Reiki lineage credentials. This is an important and integral part of learning Reiki in the proper manner.

So, now you have an idea about Traditional Usui Reiki vs. the Non-Traditional. We always stress the importance of receiving the proper training from a qualified, certified Reiki master.
