Sad animal story

On BBC News tonight. Another Brit. soldier dead in Afghanistan. He was a member of the British Army Veterinary Corp. He was a dog-handler. One of the dogs who hunted bombs. The soldier was shot and died. While being brought back to base, his dog had a heart attack and died. Two more heroes killed in a worthless war !

That is so sad, norseman. People never think of those unique members of the military. It's hard not to wonder what brought on the poor pooch's heart attack.

Strangely, my mind went straight to how messed up the dog would have been had it been forced back out on the battlefield, with a new dog-handler.

Shame they had to die, but that is the sacrifice they were manipulated into making on behalf of politicians they have never met, who would not be brave enough to go to battle themselves.

I feel that a man should know when they think before other men think for them. War is one of those things that a person should think about and take responsibility for, not take orders and play like a puppet on a stage.

*Sigh*

What a waste of precious life.

Why is a dog having a heart attack? Like seriously?!

Madness....

Think about Greyfriars Bobby - the dog that laid down on his master's grave in Scotland for 14 years [google it].
What ever we think, there can be a strong bond between man and dog.

Ohhh I see what you're saying now. The dog died because the man died. Strong emotional bond.

Thanks for shedding light.

Just my personal opinion, but I would like to see all our troops brought back home ASAP. I don't think the British public want to see any more young lives lost out there.

With all the cuts we are experiencing in this country at the moment, it makes me wonder if we can really afford to get caught up in these campaigns abroad.

I agree Myer. It's a stupid war caused by allied bungling in Iraq. The Afghani are absolutely incensed over foreign armies on their soil. The last army to succeed was Alexander the Great.
As far as the dog is concerned, we are abusing the attachment of the dog to their "pack leader" ! After all, they have been our companions for hundreds of thousands of years. On our scale, maybe the dog [in general] has an intelligence on a par with a human infant or baby but I am convinced that they do have a soul.

Dogs are amazing.

Highly social, intelligent mammals in general deserve rights imo.

Going way off on a tangent here but .....................
Mankind and the domesticated wolf were probably the first cross-species partnership. Dogs are social, co-operative beings. So are we. But where did that come from ? Who taught who ? Who was the dominant one in the partnership ? We descend from a lemur-like species - shy, timid, lacking in natural defenses. Dog descends from a hunter - aggressive, clever, structured, and possessing many natural defenses. We had intelligence but so did the wolf/dog. They had superior senses, we had a better vision platform. Does it all come down to the opposable thumb ? Did we domesticate the wolf or did the wolf domesticate us ?
