Another bit of sports derived wisdom: A bodybuilder said the most important thing for him was to know his body. We can easily translate that into the aphorism of ‘know thyself’….:)

Only a person that meditates a lot...can really answer...and even then it's their own experience...
doesn't mean it would happen to everyone, just sayin'.

Prepare yourself for the coming astral journey of death by daily riding in the balloon of God-perception.
Through delusion you are perceiving yourself as a bundle of flesh and bones, which at best is a nest of troubles.
Meditate unceasingly, that you may quickly behold yourself as the Infinite Essence, free from every form of misery. ~Paramahansa's Guru's Guru

Each of us are unique, and so meditate for however long that is right for you.

At one extreme, some don't need to meditate because they are connected 24/7.

All the answers here have Merit and give good Advice, But I would say it depends what you want to Achieve from it,
Meditating for Peace is great, but Meditating to connect to your Guides you do it for Another reason. because you do it to connect to spirit,

Yes, it is possible to meditate too much. Just like with anything else, if you do it to excess, it can begin to have negative effects. Meditation is meant to be a way to focus and calm the mind, but if you overdo it, it can actually make you feel more anxious and stressed out. It can also lead to sleep problems, as well as physical issues like headaches and nausea. So, like with anything else, moderation is key when it comes to meditation.

Agree with all that, and particularly what you say about moderation. I remember a few years back I was meditating 3-4 hours a day in a bid to overcome the extreme suffering I was experiencing at the time, and, whilst it did help to significantly reduce the severe anxiety and insomnia I'd been experiencing, it left me feeling fried after a while and I ended up having to take an extended break from meditation.

It really is a marathon and not a sprint, I think, certainly in my own experience, and it's best to listen to the signals your body and mind are giving you rather than attempting to push yourself harder than you can reasonably manage. Patience is something I definitely learnt the hard way (and I can't pretend I've completely mastered it, either ).

SUBTOPIC: Is it possible to meditate too much?
ReturningMoon, et al,

Meditation is a very personal thing. The level of effort and the reasoning is different for every practitioner. The it is not a cookie cutter answer for each person.

Most Respectfully,

It often seems sensible to maintain some level of balance

I believe balance is the key to everything. When something isn’t working in my life the first thing I look at is where the balance is out.

Buddha was right, “take the middle path”.
