Oh my goodness JOE... Can't stop laughing. Yes the fried bread . Just bread fried in a pan full of lard. Even when you bit into it the fat used to all squelch out into your mouth . Might as well just have poured a bottle of oil down your throat .
My dad loved it... My mother worked on the "mucky market" in a Saturday ( second hand market ) and my dad always cooked tea on a Saturday which was bacon , sausage , egg ,tomatoes and a plate full of fried bread .
And aye, as you say , every penny counted, no room for waste in them days .
My dad even ate the mouldy bread or mouldy cheese ...
"It's good for you " he'd say.

Oh goodness .....
The dripping was the solidified white fat from cooking which was kept to spread on bread on toast with loads of salt and it was GORGEOUS .
I used to eat it all the time. I worked in catering and I made all the home made cottage pies and so on.
I used to get a free lunch and it could be anything off the menu .
But if there was some dripping I would just have 2 slices of bread and dripping LOL.....
Oh God, if you were lucky it had a bit of brown jelly stuff too as an extra treat LOL...

Tripe is a favorite where I live. I suspect most people have no idea what it is.

Omg yes of course the fried bread. Forgot about that. My dad used to make it at weekends and we all loved it! Lovely memory.

Dripping ugh!!! Hated the look of it, the smell of it and the taste. I wouldn’t touch it!

If you have eaten a 'natural' hotdog, you probably had some tripe.

A Mexican grocery store near me sells tripe and other things like chicken claws.

If you want to see some interesting food, shop at a large Asian grocery store. I am amazed that they are allowed to sell such stuff.
