Sorting out my feelings.
Sorting out my feelings/poem
As I, lie here, I stare at the ceiling
Like I did the day before as my mind scrambles to sort out all these feelings.
I have lost count of the days I've been like this
A lump rises in my throat as I think of all I will miss
My ears hear the patter of little feet
out of the corner of my eye I see a little blond headed girl so sweet.
She crawls up to the other side of the bed
Gram-pa are you better she says as she caresses my forehead.
I just give her a smile and a slow wink
As she jumps down, a tear forms as I notice her little blond ponytails
tied up in ribbions of pink.
Ah now I am back looking at the ceiling
once again sorting out all these feelings
when there comes a tap on my bedroom door.
I see my oldest son and I wish I could get up and hug him like I have done so many times before.
He comes to my side and says just checking on you
can I get you anything is their something I can do.
We sit there in silence for a while as he pats my hand
then he says oh by the way I just bought two hundred more acres of prime cotton land.
My mind races back to the days when he was just a boy
he would ride in my lap, and when I let him steer that ole tractor his face would light up with joy.
Before he leaves
he opens the window so I can feel the cool spring breeze.
Ah it feel good on this old weathered face
so I close my eyes for a while and think about a special time and place.
It was a weekend and I had made a trip into town
there was an old soda shop where we all hung around.
As I sit there just watching the country folk pass by
it was on that little sidewalk I meet the apple of my eye.
We married and she gave me a great family
and I know soon she will come in and check on me.
Suddenly the breeze blows a sweet fragrance across my nose
which reminds of her favorite flower a long stem rose.
I open my eyes and there she is my angel standing next to my bed
she smiles and says how is my love today as she places her cheek on my head.
My heart starts to beat heavily as her lips touch mine
then she smiles and whispers to me, honey it's time.
She tells me to close my eyes and take her by the hand
the room lights up and I hear my heart beat fade as she and I
walk side by side into the promised land.
