Giving up Violent Television

For a very long time I have watched a lot of dark television shows, and have to say that I have been addicted to them. I don't watch too much tv but the shows I have watched have been so extreme and bloody that I wonder how I could sit through them. Over the years I have justified that they are just tv shows after all, but what if they are affecting me in ways I am not aware of and why have I been so eager to watch each week?

So from now on I am going to do what I can to stop watching. I am not saying I am against violent television if people want to watch it, but I wonder if this stuff makes me a darker person in ways I am not aware of. Today I am officially giving up these shows.

I haven't felt the effects of violence too much, but then I haven't watched a great deal of TV for well over a decade. Mostly films. I tend of feel sickened by the violence portrayed in certain types of ganster films. It can be, just horific, so I avoid those if they look like they're going to contain extreme violence.

I felt shocked at the level of violence in the SciFi flick, Guardians of the Galaxy, considering it's a 12 cert here. If I had kids, I'd have to seriously consider letting them watch it or not.

In my opinion, television programming contributes to what is considered acceptable in society.

I enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy and it was violent in some scenes. I watched shows like Breaking Bad, and Walking Dead, and they are violent to the extreme. I sometimes wish I had never watched them.

Yay for you... I am amazed flipping channels to see
Crime this and that ...blood, murders, strangulations even on a lighthearted show like Castle...girls
dead on the street each show...I don't watch them..Crime
victim units...it's endless!!!

I know. It's crazy. I don't think I am being overly sensitive but some of these shows on basic cable are so heavy with graphic scenes. I am pretty desensitized but I can't even watch some scenes without tensing or closing my eyes and this is prime time television.
