I found great solace in running long distance cross country in my thirties, was very helpful mentally, physically and spiritually, absolutely dreaded cross country at school , hated it and always straddled in last or thereabouts, think it is because we often had to do it in cold weather and my asthma played up.

There is a ton of recreational sports. My sister plays on a soccer team which is more of a social game. My brother does mountain biking to hang out with the lads. There is competitive sport for more talented athletes, but most is like golfing or a game of tennis or shooting some hoops etc.

Yep I gotta agree with AngelB. At school I hated it as well because it was always freezing and we were forced to play hockey, which I still hate, netball which I was useless at and run in the snow, hail or whatever the weather threw at you.
Perhaps it was more the weather than the actual sport that made it so unappealing.
Over here in Australia the weather is always good so kids get involved with two or three sports at the same time and just love it.

You are entitled to your belief and I respect that. Parents can/should only play inspirational/motivational role for guiding child to sports . Beyond a limit it can become over-bearing-monotonous-burdensome-imposing . Many a times in the glamour sports field parents unknowingly impose their hidden unfulfilled ambitions on children . That may happen but with more inspiration and motivation and with active willing participation of the child only.
