The "Biphasic" sleep theory is meant to be foolproof and was adopted in the medieval times I believe.
People went to bed and had 4 hours or so 'deep sleep'.
This was their first and proper sleep.
Then they got up for a couple of hours and did whatever they wanted/ needed to do including cooking, socialising , cleaning etc, then they went to bed again for phase 2 of sleep which would last roughly 3 hours and this was their 'second' and much lighter sleep.

Lots of reasons for not being able to sleep.
For peri- and postmenopausal women it's usually to do with hormones. But you can then work on balancing those and once you do you sleep like a baby again!
I'm currently using progesterone cream and sleep much better again (progesterone calms the brain). But you need to know if you need oestrogen as well, or not.
Linseed (oil) also balances hormones, in men as well, and can be of help. 1 tablespoon a day in yoghurt, oats, etc. Isn't expensive either, do get a good clean version, from a healthfood store.
Also when younger your hormones can be out of whack. Men have 20% less testosterone and thus too much oestrogen, women too low levels oestrogen and thus too much testosterone.
And for younger women things could get off-kilter by taking birth-control.
A good naturopath should be able to help, regardless of what the issue is, can even find out within a few minutes what the cause is for you and bring you back into balance.
Acupuncture or other good energy worker -like Eden Energy Medicine- can also do great things to bring you back into balance.
Lots of acupressure points you can do yourself for better sleep, search the net or on YouTube to find them.
MotivationalDoc on YT also has plenty of things on better sleep, like certain herbal teas etc.
Educate yourself when you have a problem. You have a vast 'library' of answers & solutions within reach: the internet.

Eat breakfast between 7 and 8 AM, get sun or SAD lamp in your eyes when you wake up, do 10k steps a day each day (takes 1 hour and a half give or take) u can listen lectures podcasts while you do it, in the evening take Magnesium Glycinate, Yin Replenisher 3 capsules, wear Orange and Red lenses blue light blockers see aliexpress (yellow ones are not so good so go for orange and red) when sun goes down or at least 3 hours before bed so melatonin won't be impaired. I mean, I'm at it since more than a decade and what I'm sharing here is my personal sauce that finally did it, it is the nectar! so if you are doing some of these, just fill in the gaps with the rest. while you begin these, it would be good to complement it with some acupuncture if you can.

FAO Shrek:
When I need a Good Nights Sleep, I put heaps of Cumin into my Food.
It goes great in Chili Con Carne, Scalloped Potatoes and goes well on Pizzas.
Cumin has a Nerve Settling affect that helps with Anxiety and Nerves allowing an easier time of it going to Sleep.
