Interesting, I guess the fact it's a single-syllable word also makes it very easy to say (the c-word is very similar in terms of its length and composition, but that has such misogynistic overtones that I find it extremely unpleasant). I've come to wonder if it doesn't constitute a sort of Freudian slip, too, in the sense that repeated use of the word might indicate that it's on the person's mind a lot because they aren't getting any (although I may very well be projecting ).

^^ I hope I'm ok with my history here - because I recall that the Anglo-Saxon language was made illegal for some time in the UK, hence these words were banned in favour of their Romance equivalents which are used ad lib nowadays without concern.

Anglo-Saxon was very onomatopoeic and succinct as well, hence the relationship of its phonetics to the 'idea'.

These words are profanities rather than swearing. Swearing is calling up the Good Lord for support re something. Like when using the word bl**dy, one's really saying "By our Lady" or blimey for "May God blind me." Zounds for "by Jesus' wounds" and on.

Otherwise, both Anglo-Saxon and Roman synonyms were often coupled with 'and' in a sentence so that speakers of either language would know what's going on. There was once a poster here who habitually did this. When it's done and complete sort of thing. When you start and commence on your quest....

^^Interesting! And another piece of the puzzle of why we English are such an odd bunch falls into place, geez Louise... why did we become so Victorian as a culture in terms of our attitudes to sex?

Is that right? I never knew that, bli... er, crikey (I'm not also taking the Lord's name in vain saying 'crikey', am I??). 'Zounds' is an excellent word, blasphemy aside, I really must try to get it back into circulation
