Just because we no longer hunt (I don’t) - still - got to admire these people for their skills.

I haven't posted this week....been busy with work...but I did get a nice buck last weekend after a morning long stalk....kinda like this video!

This IS what the hunt is about!!!
Great find Gem...........

My grandson Nick was stalked up to bow range on a doe Saturday morning and was fixing to let an arrow fly when he saw that the doe had a fawn bedded down about 10 yards from her.....

Young fawns often lay down and hide in the grass while there mom forages and can be really tough to see because they are small and covered in brown and white spots....natural camo......but Nick saw what he thought was an ear twitch just above the grass.......stopped and watched it...saw it was the fawn... let down his draw ....clicked his teeth and the doe and fawn faded into the brush and disappeared.

And I'm proud to say that Nick did the right thing.....

People do speculate on the Mongol / Turkic Tatar and the Comanche parallels and the differences of the Bows used:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLBRegxd8oI

If you want to learn about the spirituality – hunting and warfare techniques of the Mongols read the book:
https://www.amazon.in/Wolf-Totem-Jia.../dp/0141027878

I can’t remember a book that affected me so deeply than this book did.
For four days after reading it I was totally numb, followed by an eruption of a deep gut felt inner emotion - the waves of it also lasting for 4 days.

An Environmental Group associate of mine went to a conference aimed at preserving the Grasslands of Inner Mongolia and the Mongols there gave her an author signed copy of this book to remember them by, so I am not peddling a romanticized ‘spiritual hunting’ New Age fantasy book here.

****************************

Could be a tribute for both Grassland peoples:
Quote:
I still dream every night
Of them wolves, them mustangs, those endless prairies
The restless winds over mountaintops
The unspoilt frontier of my kith n`kin
The hallowed land of the Great Spirit
I still believe
In every night
In every day
I am like the caribou
And you like the wolves that make me stronger
We never owed you anything
Our only debt is one life for our Mother.

"The Shark Callers of Kontu" is great documentary about the spiritual aspects of the hunt (even though most of those aspects are 'secret'), and how the old knowledge is being lost to modernity. It's well worth a look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuHzmzIcZFo.

I speak the language in the documentary fluently, and although some of what is said is lost in translation, the subtitles are accurate.

That is it – kinda – in a nutshell.
You are a gem – Gem

I wish the SBS tv Channel would still broadcast the documentary “The Gospel According to the Papuans” at Christmas:
Quote:
With gentle irony, this film records the overlay of Christianity on native beliefs that occurs in the Huli tribe, one of seven hundred tribes living in Papua New Guinea. In many areas of the world where Christian missionaries have brought their message, similar confusions and misconceptions abound. Recently, two rival groups of missionaries appeared in Papua, one Catholic and the other Seventh Day Adventists, creating competition for conversions. In past years, other Christian churches like the Lutherans, Methodists and Apostolics had tried to convert the tribe, with varying degrees of success. When chief Ghini agrees to be baptized a Catholic after being bribed with a shirt and tie, a large proportion of the Hulis follow. But first there were heated debates comparing their ancient spiritual beliefs with the tenets of Catholicism. One man argues, "Missionaries only came here to stop our traditions."
So funny – soooo sad.
But we are so lucky to still be able to learn about the old ways in Australasia.

Even though I now would support anti-whaling and Greenpeace, I cannot help but think nostalgically about the past, when the wold was still in balance and the (proto) Koryaks/Chukchi would rock onto our shores with their skin boats and we’d have collective whale hunts.

Perhaps we also used the fly agaric together from where our oldest Saami joik and Viena Karel singing styles originated (???)

Since the Whole Universe is in the Drum (Upper, Middle and Lower Worlds i.e. all the layers of creation) you then sang to the “Universal Echo” ….. No need to confess your ‘sins’ to the priest, since you were/are fully transparent to the Whole of Creation already …..

This is the Buddhist Shambhala Warrior practice, but imo. it applies to spiritual hunter as well:
Quote:
With discipline like the sun; - awareness like an echo; - wisdom and skilful activity like a bow and arrow - one gains the power to hold one's seat, not exaggerating and not rejecting experiences ….

well thankfully most of what I would want to say but didn't want to disrupt this thread actually saying has been said.. lol except that eating dead animals is toxic to living humans, however if you are going to do it, freshly killed deer are much much healthier

anyways that being said, it does sound like a lovely almost romanticized yet fruitful hobby or lifestyle, whatever the activity's supposed to be called. But I think even better, would be to get all geared up and get your salt licks raised and your zen on so the deer don't detect you, and shoot them... with a camera! omg you could get so many great shots and I know that looking at those pictures, and experiencing being close to the animals without having to kill them would be immensely more nourishing than eating their rotting flesh. I feel like man's purpose on Earth is to make it a better place, and if one of the problems is an overpopulation of deer, then we should be creating a better habitat and amusement parks and stuff for them, instead of just mass murdering them. There are so many ways we could work/play with or for animals all over the world that would make the world a better place and benefit us all. Man should use its genius and stealth for higher purposes. plus the dwindling habitat is because of our intrusion anyway.. but I digress, I know hunting means a lot to many people for a variety of reasons. but you can have most of that fun without the actual murder by learning to appreciate them through photography instead. Perhaps you could even engineer your trappings and whatnot to inspire better pictures, like put the salt licks super high so they have to stand up on their hind legs with their front paws in the air or something and that would make an awesome picture. much more impressive than just hauling its lifeless body home in the back of your truck. I'm familiar with Native American history so I understand the sacredness and respect and all the glamour and 'peace' of the hunt, but I just don't buy it, even though I love and respect Native Americans and other peoples who think hunting makes sense. The fact is dead meat is toxic to humans so while it might seem to nourish you for a bit the aftermath is the body needing to purge all sorts of poison that eating the dead animal created internally, nevermind the soul karma or whatever.. In cold areas a lot of ancient people nourished themselves on chaga mushroom which grows on some birch trees, and it makes a mild yet pretty delicious tea. tastes nothing like mushrooms but it's technically a parasitic fungus yet it is super healing and the specimen is very unique as it has dna in common with humans moreso than any other fungus, plant, or animal species. anyway I'm sure there's other stuff that grows out there that can be healthy, and we have ability to grow stuff ourselves, especially with technology nowadays. so the necessity factor just doesn't hold true. feeling like your belly is gonna burst and actually being healthfully full are two completely different things.. and humans tend to think they are getting energy from eating animals when it is often the cortisol and other dead animal energy surges and adrenaline and whatnot that they are addicted to. hurts in the long run. but hey if you are going to go hunt with your gun anyways, could you please at least bring a camera too so you can take some pictures first?

*edit* decided to take a quick look of the posts on this page as I only read from the first.. that is so nice that your nephew let the mother and doeter go Lucky 1. now wouldn't that have been amazing to take a picture of?? do you guys bring your cell phones with? I wonder if deer can detect the toxicity of wifi and bluetooth and that stuff.. just saying cuz I didn't think you brought a camera but realized most people carry cell phones wherever they go so there's a camera on there. do you guys take pictures in the woods sometimes? hehe I'm gonna plaster flyers for the deer all over the forest trees telling them to bring their kids out with them during hunting season so hopefully hunters will have mercy on them well I'd worry about littering but I'm sure some nice hunters would have no problem cleaning up and disposing of the flyers for me when they find them, so it might be worth a shot.. just think, if it saves one mom or dad or doe.. wow what a difference that single life would make in the deer's world

Wild venison (as apposed to farm/ranch raised) is extraordinarily lean, essentially having zero fat in the muscle tissue....it is for all purposes fat free meat including saturated fat. It just has no fat at all and is pretty much pure protein.

Because of this it can be very dry if not cooked properly.
For this reason cooking in ways that add moisture are the way to go.....

All the tougher cuts we like to cut up and make stews or chili out of....or even soups!

Prime cuts such as the loins and tenderloins I like to slice, season and grill medium rare like a steak.

Very tough pieces like the shoulders can be done as a roast and either cooked long and slow in a crockpot or in pressure cooker till it is tender......or ground into burger....and there is all kinds of things you can do with the burger!

And no...I would not say that it tastes like beef.
