Just another example of man's casual disregard for the sentient beings that are meant to be in his protective care.
5 horses died at the Cheltenham Festival last month.

I can see your point here necta,I for one am greatly saddened to hear of the death of these horses and yet I quite happily eat meat.I'm thinking that perhaps it is the special relationship that humans have with horses that leaves us shocked and saddened when we hear news like this.
Certain species of animal (dogs being the other that springs to mind) have a bond with humans that goes way back to ancient times. This fact perhaps makes it all the more surprising why we would let these horses suffer at our hands like this.
But then again,if those jockeys had been riding cattle yesterday, would we be so upset? It's a contentious issue, and one very much open to debate.

Necta: Oh, I see the point you were trying to make now. Sorry.
Fear is fear, pain is pain, suffering is suffering, death is death....so there shouldn't be any distinction. No doubt, all people will come to that realisation eventually. Sadly, probably later than sooner...

I'm wondering if poor old Synchronicity had a premonition of doom or sensed ill omens? He clearly did not want to race...

Another species that we have ruined by selective breeding. I find it hard to imagine that the ancestral horses would be so delicate.
One thing I did notice was the number of riderless horses still jumping perfectly - I suppose this would be herd behaviour.

This is dreadfully upsetting and imo just unnecessary. I don't see why any animal should suffer in the name of sport.

Suppose a very dangerous race existed for humans, involving jumping over gaps, and any bad falls down the gaps resulted regularly in deaths. The race would be banned, without doubt. Yet somehow the organisers of the GN think it's all right if horses risk death - and the poor creatures don't even get to choose whether to take a risk, like humans can.
