Because their meditation took them to a certain depth and no further. They liked their mantra, they felt good from the meditation, but they wanted more.

And maybe they became disillusioned with the organisational structure of TM, which had its fair share of problems.

Peace

In my case, I had the initial course of 3 sessions plus the puja ceremony where I was given my mantra and taught the technique. Thereafter I was left to my own devices, apart from requesting a checkup once or twice, but I didn't have any problems to report so just carried on by myself. There weren't any meetups or newsletters or anything like that (this was well before the internet).

My natural curiosity about the whole subject involved regular visits to the library where I gradually picked up a broader knowledge of meditation traditions and I realised that TM was a small part of a big subject. TM in those days had a habit of claiming a lot of benefits for itself exclusively, without mentioning that many other meditation schools share the benefits too.

Well explained...It means that if we have to remove growing stress and other things from society then TM is best as you said it is small part of big subject also it is simple one technique.
