How is bhakti different from love?
In Bhagavad Gita 11.54, it seems to me that Lord Krishna is saying that he can be understood through bhakti alone. How's bhakti different from loving God? About "alone", if someone understands God through bhakti, then can't they communicate the understanding verbally to me?

They are the same - but bhakti has the devotion aspect, the surrender and service, following any
direction or guidance with deep trust and reverence.
Is love reverence? I dunno.
Is love surrender with service? I dunno...maybe...imo, not exactly the same.

Right.
And you probably do not keep her in the forefront of your mind...dedicating your actions to her...inwardly bowing your heart to her.
