Not all elderly people have wisdom. Some I’ve met are just plain ignorant and nasty. I also think you have to earn respect.

Good point although I don't want to generalise all of them just because of a few sour individuals. It's always nice to be respectful of people, while giving kindness to others is often returned.

I do respect my elders, but for many years my parents gave me no reason to respect them. I married outside of my race and although it was an exciting time for me, getting married, my parents unconditional love became very conditional toward me. They said, "We have to live in this town so don't post an engagement notice in the newspaper." Ignorant and disrespectful of my then fiance.
Fast forward many years and their both in bad health in their 80's. I feel compassion for them, but I don't think they'll ever gain my full respect.

We certainly could walk away from people who treat us badly.
But who we cross path with is never just random or coincidental, but rather with purpose for our personal spiritual growth.
Once we uncover the true purpose and embrace the embedded lesson to become wiser with more benevolent maturity, then we will have greater peace and joy in heart and mind.
And if we fail to see or heed the embedded lesson this time, synchronicity will create another situation for us to try again.
So many beautiful systems in place to help us return to our true nature of love.
The more love we have within the more we will see everything from a benevolent and positive perspective.

I think it's good to respect elders, not just because they have more life experience, but simply because they are older. Real respect, though, should go both ways—if it’s one-sided, it doesn’t feel genuine. Still, as a personal practice, I choose to respect elders even if they don’t always return it. It’s great that you have always respected your elders!
