Sounds like the via negative……simply seek to eliminate the ‘bad’ and accept what remains..

" To enter the Buddha Way is to stop discriminating between good and evil and to cast aside the mind that says this is good and that is bad."

Yes, Ummon was given my seal of approval (FWIW).

The "Sermon" of the Flower

Case 6 (Gateless Gate):

When Shakyamuni was at Mount Grdhrakuta, he held out a flower to his listeners. Everyone was silent. Only Mahakashyapa broke into a broad smile.

NOTE: I always loved this particular "sermon".

It's actually not a Sermon given by The Buddha but a Chinese Chan invention

Are you sure about that? You may be correct, as the story does appear in the Zen Classics.

Here's a great bunch of koans from which to pick one for discussion.

What caught my attention was:

"When the many are reduced to one, to what is the one reduced?"

Is there any juncture against sharing your interpretation of a koan with another ? Would that rob their experience of a possible epiphany ? And to be commended for your insightful interpretation…..to what purpose ? To serve your ego ?

Just wondering….this is all very interesting….but I am sure that my questions have been addressed by adherents in the past…..

Yes, very sure according to the experts who can't find any trace of it before 1036 and then found in Zen Classics.
