I understand many posts have been deleted here - to explain...Matt's idea or intention was for this to be a safe place ---
thus "Loving" Tributes. :) Not a place for back and forth discussions on a person's life...here.
If anyone has a beef with a deceased person, which is generally in any situation in bad taste..."Think it, don't Say it", iow...
try starting a Thread in Strong Opinons...see if it flies there...no quarantees.

Pope Francis chose His Papal name in honour of Saint Francis of Assisi.
MAKE ME A CHANNEL OF YOUR PEACE.
1 Make me a channel of your peace:
Where there is hatred, let me bring your love;
where there is injury, your healing power,
and where there’s doubt, true faith in you.
2 Make me a channel of your peace:
where there’s despair in life let me bring hope;
Where there is darkness, only light,
and where there’s sadness, ever joy.
3 O, Spirit, grant that I may never seek
so much to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love with all my soul.
4 Make me a channel of your peace:
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
in giving to all that we receive,
and in dying that we’re born to eternal life.
Saint Francis of Assisi.
Very apt.

So is his first encyclical, Laudato Si, where he writes about ecological decline.

I was just chatting with my Viennese friend, Jakob, and he reminded me of his own personal heartwarming experience with Pope Francis about a year ago.
Jakob and his girlfriend Scarlett, who was wheelchair-bound due to Ataxia, traveled to Italy together and really wanted to get even a slight glimpse of Pope Francis in person during their trip. They were fortunate to have been admitted to a huge public audience but Scarlett could not see well because the standing crowd obstructed her view.
A kind official saw her plight and guided Jakob and Scarlett to a place in front of the crowd so that they could see better.
They were awed by the energy exuded by Pope Francis as he spoke to the crowd but they were totally unprepared
for what was to happen next.
They had felt a very special connection with Pope Francis during the audience as he seemed to be looking directly at them at times and speaking directly to them.
After speaking to the crowd, Pope Francis stunned them by walking down from the elevated position from which he was speaking and proceeded directly towards them.
Pope Francis then extended his hand and shook Jakob's hand and Scarlett's hand while sharing some kind words about life in general and health in particular.
The warmth and friendliness of Pope Francis was so genuine that it left a lasting positive very personal impression on both of them. Wow !
Although I was raised Roman Catholic, I am not a practicing Catholic. Nonetheless, I really admire Pope Francis for his simple lifestyle in the midst of Vatican opulence and his caring progressive views on women, the poor in general, the GLBT community, and other issues as well.
He reminds me so much of my favorite Roman Catholic saint, his namesake, Francis of Assisi. Pope Francis stood tall against a very conservative entrenched hierarchy that audibly opposed his positions at times.
He was a spiritual giant in the Vatican. Since most of the electors who are eligible to vote were appointed by Francis, I am hopeful that his successor will walk in his footsteps.

"Pope Francis stood tall against a very conservative entrenched hierarchy
that audibly opposed his positions at times"
I like this sentence esp, Still Waters.
For the detractors that read here, no one is perfect...but, his good ways outnumber
any 'mistakes' or oversights, that is clear, not opinion.
