It's hard for us to know exactly what they dream.
I remember watching my dog asleep, making running movements with her legs, so it seemed she dreamed of running. She would make sucking noises so maybe she was dreaming of suckling, drinking or eating. She would try to bark, but that came out as a weird muffled woofing sound -or howl. She howled when we had been watching videos of wolves before she fell asleep! Sometimes she would wake up with a sudden shock, so maybe she'd had a scary dream.
That was all I could imagine about what she was dreaming, based on watching her.
But many times when she was alive here I had dreams with her in them. And since she left -far fewer dreams with her. So maybe she also came into my dreams, the same as she was with me in life? Those dreams were of walks in fields and woods, and different adventures, very much the same as we actually did in life.

Supposedly when you dream you release a chemical to stop you acting out your dreams. Sleepwalkers have a problem with this chemical, unsurprisingly. I saw on tv once a cat that had been given a substance that was intended to prevent the chemical being released; basically they induced sleepwalking in the cat. The film showed the cat apparently trying to catch birds in it's sleep. Odd because, regrettably and unfortunately, it had only ever lived in a laboratory.
