Bill of Rights for Cetaceans

Marine biologists and philosophers have joined forces in support of a declaration of rights for whales and dolphins because of their astonishing intelligence and emotional empathy, making them equal to humans. They say that the cetaceans should be classed as "non-human persons" with a right to Life, Liberty, and Well-being. They should not be killed by hunting, or kept in captivity or servitude. They cannot be the property of any individual or government.
The supporters said that the public can support the bill by not going to sea life parks which keep dolphins, porpoises, or whales.

Is this a sign that mankind is growing up at last ?

[source - i/independent - daily national in UK

[btw Amazon is offering whale products for sale via it's subsidiary in Japan - whale burgers, whale jerky, etc. Aren't you proud to be human ?

Unfortunately many parents are hoodwinked into believing that it is "educational" and "fun" for children to visit sea life parks. So they will not disappear overnight, as "big bucks" (as the Americans say) are involved.

However, I share your hope that this proposal is a positive sign that scientists and philosophers are developing greater awareness.

A good idea. I wish them well, but I fear the powers that be will take no notice, alas.
But people can 'vote' with their feet and their wallets and boycott SeaWorld and the like.
Hard to imagine the anguish of an ocean-going creature to be confined in a small pool for the rest of its life - not to mention being made to perform stupid stunts.

PS: By the way, thank you. A fine post, Norseman.
(I didn't know you were an animal person.) Good for you.
