Taking care of yourself. Treating yourself with the same kindness and compassion you give to others. Especially when you make mistakes. Everyone makes them. That's part of the education here on Earth. We make mistakes so we can learn from them. A lot of these so called mistakes really aren't mistakes but part of the learning process, anyway.

What might self love be in part of this process?

An act of conscious engagement towards yourself to nurture and understand your true nature.
No, that's not it.

Prepare yourself for the coming astral journey of death by daily riding in the balloon of God-perception.
Through delusion you are perceiving yourself as a bundle of flesh and bones, which at best is a nest of troubles.
Meditate unceasingly, that you may quickly behold yourself as the Infinite Essence, free from every form of misery. ~Paramahansa's Guru's Guru

I don't want to have to clean up the mess.

You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. So just spill and leave the mess for someone else, to clean up.
You need to give your memory some self love. It’s obviously missing out..

I had been pondering this lately as well. I agree with wstein.

I have been thinking of it as well like a parent-child, when part of me wants to do something that another part doesn't.

It's about making choices and committing to things that are good for growth.
