Plant based…

I’m trying plant based meat the next couple of weeks ordered it with my groceries… sauces and chocolate and pop….

Hopefully it’s really good - can continue to buy what’s available then.. slowly things coming available when they in main stream stores will be good..

Have you looked at the ingredients?

I’m a vegetarian, I tend to stay right away from processed plant based meats.

I prefer to eat legumes and natural protein sources.

I don't think they should be allowed to call such things 'meat'.
There should be some law that what's labelled meat, milk, cheese, etc come from animal only.

In my country we have a meat roll that is called ''slavink'', literally in Dutch ''vink'', which is finch in English (a bird). Even though it isn't the bird but it is pork meat, so the name is very misleading. Then there are ''flesh tomatoes'', which aren't really flesh either.

I don't think any of it matters. You just view and read the product and you know what it is. Unless it's a specific regional product with special preparation, then I understand the need for a patent.

I suppose it doesn't matter really when the consumer is conscious enough to read labels etc. I was thinking more from the marketing side.
There seems to be an agenda to try and normalise these junk foods masquerading as health foods and a way to market it probably is to call it 'plant-based meat'
- capturing both the plant-based consumer and the I-really-want-to-eat-meat consumer in one go.
If they would just be honest and call them protein mix or something accurate.
I am just more concerned about consumers such as children/teens being targeted.

I have been vegan and vegatarian on and off at different times of life. I'm an omnivore now. When I first went vegan in the 90s I bought the lie that meat substitutes were healthy etc when they weren't.

I must admit the adverts make those plant based foods look really yummy , to the point I want to try them, but they don't stock them in my local mini market .
With the present "financial climate" I feel many people are cutting back and being alternative.
So I guess we can all make our own variation of plant based foods ...

Just a story.
My friends have been vegetarians for 49 years...and are sickly, dark circles under their eyes.
Once a friend called me to intervene -seeing what they actually ate.
They ate beans alright...but not WITH grains. Dah.
And SO much pasta and potatoes in the form of perogis, often.
I got them to get a protein powder, after 3xs tries...they are MUCH better. :)
Oh also another friend ...same thing ---she thanked me when I told her her low energy is not enough protein.
She never read a nutritional article or book in her life.

I lasted almost 20 yrs being a vegetarian....they continued on.
I rem my sensitivity to cold, and circles under my eyes, too!
I wasn't combining tofu and lentils with grains either all the time!
Every day...we need complete protein. But, ya gotta know what that means.
Upping your B12, also.

Btw, I did not understand 'plant based meat' ...you mean fake meat...yes..it's pretty good!

I can understand true vegetarians/ vegans not wanting to eat a meat substitute....
If they are against eating animal meat why would they wish to eat something that resembles a dead animal ??????
My husband is an alcoholic ( recovering) but people feel "sorry " for him cos they think he's missing out on birthdays or Christmas so they buy him non alcoholic wines and beers .
It's probably the worst thing you can do ...
He politely pours them away afterwards and has a drink of juice instead .
