I personally see it differently and that's fine. Our true self is the 'I am' Our ego is what comes after the 'I am' when we add all our attributes thinking that they are who we truly are 
The alter ego can be thought of as a person's clone or second self which is an illusion..
Just my opinion though |

Or 'I Am' = pure consciousness (True Self). Everything that comes after 'I Am' is ego. Imo only |
