In neti-neti meditation, one tries to strip away everything we see as being ourself, until we come down to awareness, and then they say we are awareness.

The question here is, what is awareness without anything to be aware of?

Ultimately, what we are aware of is our own mind. There is where a world is created in which we live and experience life. When it comes down to it, we never truly sense anything from our senses whatsoever. All they can do is send signals, digital patterns of nerves activated or not activated. These patterns are what the brain uses to construct it's internal world that awareness is aware of. Take away those patterns, and the brain can still use it's memory of past patterns to dream up a reality, but like the memory of a lost loved one, it fades in resolution over time. But if there never were any patterns coming in, then the brain never had anything to watch and create a reality based on those patterns. Nothing to be aware of, so what then is awareness without it.

Assuming that no senses means no senses (i.e. no cheating by assuming other senses then the five exists and would awaken) then no, I don't see that the human mind would be self aware, conscious of a self, or anything else.

BTW: As an aside, in the PBS series The Brain with David Eagleman, there is a piece about how if one places an electrode in a brain, and begins to fire it on and off, that brain will begin to watch it looking to see if there are any discernable patters there it can "make sense of". This I find hauntingly similar to the way in which the human race watches light coming from distant stars and galaxies looking to see if there are any discernable patterns there we can "make sense of", in our efforts to become aware of others who are not ourselves.

We don't see the code coming in on the senses, we just see what the mind creates with it.

We define our "self" in relation to everything else, everything that we define as not ourselves.

Both worlds looking to define self against a larger backdrop of other.

True you wouldn't experience anything, obviously.

There'd be no point in having a brain and you probably wouldn't apart from the bits that run the Autonomous NS. There are many feedback loops between sense organs via the peripherals to the developing brain. Without sense organs the brain wouldn't develop.

Consider quadriplegia where the senses are cut off through damage to the CNS.
