Sometimes I feel as if God is talking to me, but it soon passes then I forget it happened and weeks and months pass by. I don't think I talk to God enough.

I agree that "the short answer is via the Spirit". 
At one point, as you duly noted, it directed me to sources ... scriptures, books, happenings, or specific people ... and sometimes it still does. However, in complete stillness ("Be still and know that I AM God" - Psalm 46:10), meditative revelations happen more frequently now in dream-like fashion (visual/auditory/etc.) as one "knows without thinking". I rarely read much any more. |

God talks to be through the Holy Spirit, who is my main guide. My belief is that the Holy Spirit is everyone's main guide. I can ask for guidance and receive messages directly from the Holy Spirit, and so can everyone.

Yup. And to answer the 'how' part of the question...for me...
ideas, guidance, direction, plain old answers to, "Lord, I'm late where are my keys? Lol..." - pop into my mind. 
That's probably the job of my angels - but it's all coming from God Himself,
(Who has no gender).
