A sage therefore functioning in duality is completely Non-dual, is one with everything around.
Fair .There can be many more aspects . But these ones need more elboaration with examples.

Compassion towards rock may definitely be praiseworthy. Many people have found lot of things like diamonds , fuel , metals etc by looking (here meaning studying) at stones , rock,earth/falling apple etc . Compassion towards a Rock needs elaboration to see how it pervades /extends life and how it is great.

Maybe changing my affirmation into a question will make it easier to understand.

My affirmation:
"I will never know if another is enlightened"

Changed into a question:
"How can One enlightened see another in anything else whatever it is?"

What was the question again ? lol... I suppose that is part of it, it's like a topic you've been asked to write about or a question on an exam paper and so you are still waiting on your certificate or diploma which says he is enlightened and so is she so you can place it on the wall. An enlightened being is aware that there is suffering in the world, he or she is awake to that suffering ? Anyway what was the question again ?

This might help.

Enlightened is not part of my vocabulary;
I just think a high or an evolved person, an aware person, maybe a wise person.
Not that you were asking, Legrand, but
I'd say, look into their eyes, observe their reactions, (to a flower, a task or a mean person), witness the ease and kindness.
It's always the kindness to others that is the first 'clue' exactly where a person is at spiritually.
As John Randolph Scott said in his book, 'Superbeings' - they are all around us. He describes the stages
we are all passing through as we become Superbeings ---which is our destiny

Neither am I...(did it sound like I thought you were saying that? I wasn't.)
Anyway,
I sure hope it doesn't take me as long as waiting for everyone!
I have a mental picture of those higher than me reaching back to give
me a hand climbing a ladder or mountain...and me helping others.
Actually, hahaha, all of us reaching giving a hand.
